The desire to create documents of people that help them feel gentler towards themselves and each other is what motivates me. When it comes to children in particular, I want them to have proof that someone looked at them intently with certainty of their potential and no fear of their complexities.
My clients are a unique bunch. They are folks who appreciate fine art, are somewhat risky in their approach to life, and prefer honest, unusual portraiture to contrived images. They tend to be curious about themselves and like it that I ask a lot of questions in getting to know them. I am very protective of the intimacies people share with me, and I am especially honored to know most of my subjects for years.
When I am photographing my subjects, my energy is solely funneled into seeing—each person as an individual, their relationships to each other, the way they are in their environment. Sometimes this comes easy, sometimes not. It makes no difference to me if certain people require more time to work with than others. My priority is the comfort of my subjects and finding a way to the quintessential photograph.
